“Buddy, no,” his walker, Lisa, warned.

“Buddy, yes,” the Beagle thought, gripping the largest stick imaginable between his jaws.

Lisa sighed, staring at the absurdly oversized branch. “That thing’s bigger than you.”

Buddy ignored her. It was a perfect stick—long, slightly curved, bark just rough enough to chew. A masterpiece of nature. He pranced proudly through the park, head held high, tail wagging like a victorious flag.

The people stared in Addison’s Vitruvian Park. A few laughed. A child pointed, whispering, “That dog is crazy.”

Lisa groaned. “Okay, genius, we have a problem.”

Up ahead stood a narrow park gate—the only exit. Buddy approached confidently.

And—clunk.

The stick wedged itself firmly between the gateposts.

Buddy’s eyes widened. He pulled left. Clunk. Pulled right. Clunk.

Lisa crossed her arms. “Told you.”

Buddy released the stick, taking a step back. He studied the gate, then the stick. He sniffed. He licked his nose. And then—he attempted the only possible solution.

He charged.

CLUNK.

Lisa burst out laughing. “Oh my God, Buddy, you absolute maniac.”

Buddy blinked, dazed. The stick lay on the ground, mocking him.

Lisa knelt, broke the stick in half, and handed him a smaller piece. “There. Happy now?”

Buddy considered. Technically, two sticks were better than one. He wagged furiously, trotting ahead with double the loot.

Lisa shook her head. “Unbelievable.”

Buddy? Completely, utterly satisfied.

Later That Evening…

Jan, Buddy’s owner was relaxed on the couch, sipping tea, when she heard a an odd thunk!

She peeked around the corner.

Buddy stood in the hallway, tail wagging proudly, a huge stick clamped in his mouth.

The giant stick was at least 5ft long.

“Buddy,” Jan said slowly, “how did you get that in the house?”

Buddy blinked innocently.

She looked at the front door. Closed. Back door? Also closed.

Lisa narrowed her eyes.

Buddy simply turned and tried to march nonchalantly down the hallway. The stick hit both walls. Clunk, clunk, clunk.

Undeterred, Buddy began a 37-point turn to angle the stick through the hallway.

From the living room came the sound of a lamp crashing to the floor.

Jan buried her face in her hands.

Buddy’s tail thumped joyfully, finally triumphant.
